Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the roleNow is an exciting time to join Toitū Te Whenua, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ); The LINZ Basemaps Squad are looking for a Senior Developer on a fixed term basis through to 30 June 2027. LINZ Basemaps are essential for providing spatial context to customer data and decision-making across Aotearoa, New Zealand. As a senior member of the Basemaps Squad, you will play a key role in delivering vital web mapping products and services to meet current and future customer needs.

This role supports significant programmes such as 3D Coastal Mapping, which will map up to 40% of New Zealand’s coastline, improving baseline datasets to better understand the impact of sea level rise; and will contribute to the Future Topographic Mapping Programme, which focuses on modernising a world-class topographic product and data offering. This work is varied, interesting, and rewarding.

As a Senior member of the Squad, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the design, deployment, testing, operation and maintenance of LINZ Basemap products and tools. You will share your knowledge and contribute to a wide range of Open-Source Software solutions. We are looking for someone with the willingness to learn and align to our way of working. He pūkenga tou – Skills & Experience

  • Current knowledge of cloud-based services (including AWS) for infrastructure deployment, monitoring, data storage, computation, and web service delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully delivering work within an Agile environment.
  • Proven effective communication skills to promote, collaborate, influence and advocate for the product roadmap.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to distil customer insights and identify opportunities for product improvements.
  • Coding ability to add to our existing code base (knowledge of Python, JavaScript/TypeScript)
  • Skills and experience in product planning, objective setting, release planning, product backlog, operational escalation, and related activities
  • Keeping up to date with technology, development best practices, and other technological, digital, or geospatial initiatives to ensure LINZ provides well supported products

Experience in the following areas would be an advantage:

  • Experience working with open-source libraries and communities and an enthusiasm for engagement across the open geospatial ecosystem.
  • Development experience that supports open geospatial data pipelines and metadata creation, maintenance, and validation (GDAL, PDAL, STAC)
  • Experience in Data Engineering at scale (Argo Workflows, Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with asynchronous, distributed architectures, serverless (AWS Lambda, EKS, S3, Docker)
  • Experience working with infrastructure as code (AWS CDK)
  • Familiarity with creating and managing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
  • Having studied in a relevant field or have relevant experience or tertiary qualification in a geospatial or computer science discipline.
  • Familiarity with a variety of geospatial software (QGIS, ArcGIS, MapLibre).
  • Experience implementing OGC standards (STAC, OGC API standards).
  • Familiarity with cloud-optimised geospatial data formats (COG, COPC, GeoParquet).
